Asian Spirit joins refleeting bandwagon
ASIAN Spirit plans to acquire an Airbus aircraft in the first quarter next year for the carrier’s planned operations in Thailand, its executive said.
In a telephone interview, Butch Rodriquez, Asian Spirit vice president, said the airline plans to lease an Airbus A320 with 220 seating capacity to serve the company’s Bangkok flights.
He said Asian Spirit, which is owned by the Turalba family, has applied before the Civil Aeronautical Board (CAB) to fly atleast six flights a week from Manila to Bangkok.
The CAB is set to hold bilateral talks with the government of Thailand this month. The regulator is in talks with New Zealand and Singapore.
Rodriguez said the carrier will also acquire two McDonnell Douglas (MD) 83 aircraft, which will be used for its expansion.
“We are currently under negotiation for a lease agreement and we expect to deliver the plane in two to three months,” he said.
Rivals Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific also embarked on massive refleeting programs in light of the rebound in air travel.
Rodriguez said Asian Spirit’s new aircraft will be used to fly to Korea, Palau and domestic destinations. Asian Spirit flies to Incheon, Korea via Davao and Kalibo.
It flies to local destination not served by its bigger rivals. These routes include Batanes, Busuanga, Boracay, San Jose Mindoro, Marinduque, Surigao del Norte and del Sur, Catarman, Calbayog, Masbate, Catanduanes, Taytay, Palawan, Dipolog, Clark Special Economic Zone, Tuguegarao, Antique, Cagayan de Oro, Ormoc and Puerto Princesa.
Earlier, the company deferred its plan to sell shares to the public for the first time to next year, as the airline is unable to meet the requirements of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
